Choose a credential that reflects your work.

A practical framework for comparing professional scope, your experience, and the evidence you can bring.

01 / Professional pathways

Begin with responsibilities.

A certification title is useful only when its scope relates to the work you do. Start by describing your responsibilities in concrete terms: the systems you assess, the decisions you make, the evidence you produce, and the people who depend on your judgment.

An application security engineer may work across penetration testing, secure design, and remediation. An auditor may combine controls evaluation with organizational governance. Choose the certification that best captures the part of your practice you want assessed, rather than the most senior-sounding name.

Read the syllabus as a working checklist.

Review the published topics one at a time. For each, note whether you have performed related work, can explain the concept, and can identify a useful example. This makes the difference between familiarity and experience easier to see.

Use the exam duration and passing score to understand the assessment requirements. Treat these as scheme-specific facts; do not assume related certifications have the same conditions.

A practical checklist
  • Which topics are part of my current role?
  • Where can I describe a concrete project or decision?
  • Which areas need further preparation?
  • Does the scope support my professional direction?

Make a relevant application.

Your application should connect your experience to the selected discipline. Explain what you personally contributed to a project, the constraints you worked within, and the result or lessons learned. Include a public professional profile or portfolio when it supports your account.

The pathway finder is a guide to related areas of practice. It does not establish a mandatory sequence or guarantee admission. Each certification requires its own application review, followed by examination if you are accepted.
